Rule

Rule: Be universal; remember that its not about you

As a designer, it's important to keep in mind that what you're designing not only applies to you, but your audience. You are designing for two people: the client and your target audience. It's important to connect with your target audience because your goal is to communicate and send them a message through design. It's also important to research background information about your subject to better understand your audience through research and brainstorming.

Being universal means stepping out of your comfort zone and exploring new methods and possibilities that will effectively convey the message of your design. You have to set your preferences aside and focus on what's appropriate for the occasion. You have to incorporate key elements that your audience will be familiar with. Once you come across that key element,  a connection is created between the design and your audience. That key element grabs the attention of the audience, and effectively delivers the message.
